Dressing for Royal Ascot | Oriona Robb, Fashion Stylist
ONE OF THE MOST QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH EVENTS IN THE CALENDAR, ROYAL ASCOT IS FAST APPROACHING. THE EVENT IS KNOWN FOR ITS STYLISH RACE DAY OUTFITS AND ICONIC HAT DESIGNS, BUT IT ALSO REQUIRES ATTENDEES TO ABIDE BY AN OFFICIAL DRESS CODE FOR THE ROYAL ENCLOSURE. HERE, WE ASK ORIONA ROBB, LONDON FASHION CONSULTANT AND PERSONAL STYLIST, FOR HER TIPS ON DRESSING FOR THE OCCASION.
Royal Ascot is known for its elegant and refined outfits, but how can you add a contemporary twist, giving a more current look and feel to an otherwise classic outfit?
Consider incorporating modern accessories, such as statement jewellery or a stylish clutch, to update a traditional look. Choose fabrics with unique textures or patterns and opt for contemporary cuts and silhouettes to bring a classic outfit into the present day.
Which trends from the Spring/Summer catwalks do you think we’ll see at Royal Ascot? And which designers do you suggest for your clients?
I’m predicting that many attendees will opt for vibrant colours, bold prints, and flowing silhouettes. Designers like Valentino and Stella McCartney are known for their modern, chic styles, which would be perfect for a contemporary Royal Ascot look.
Of course, a hat is the most iconic part of any Royal Ascot outfit. For those of us who may not wish to sport a dramatic hat, what other options would you suggest?
Consider fascinators, headbands adorned with flowers or jewels, or elegant hair accessories that can add a touch of glamour without being overwhelming. Just be sure to abide by the official Ascot dress code for headwear.
For those who may be a little more daring and adventurous, which hat designs would you suggest? Are there any milliners that you’d recommend?
For those who want to make a bold statement, consider hats with unique shapes, intricate detailing, or vibrant colours. Milliners like Victoria Grant, Carly Hemming and V V Chapeau are renowned for their avant-garde designs, perfect for those looking to stand out.
Unfortunately, as with many outdoor events in Britain, we have to consider planning a wardrobe for all weathers. What are your tips for an outfit that’s perfect come rain or shine?
To ensure your outfit is perfect regardless of the weather, choose layers that can be added or removed as needed. A lightweight, stylish coat or a chic umbrella can be practical and fashionable. Fabrics like silk and chiffon are great for warmer days, while a tailored blazer or shawl can provide warmth if the weather turns cool. Laura Green, Suzannah London and Safiyaa never disappoint with there classic yet sophisticated looks.
Over the years, we’ve seen celebrities and royalty in some stunning outfits. Who are your personal favourites?
Some of my personal favourites include Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, known for her timeless elegance, and Lady Gabriella Windsor, who often brings a modern edge to classic styles. Both are excellent sources of inspiration for creating a sophisticated and stylish Royal Ascot outfit. Last year I loved the sophisticated look of Sabrina Elba.
