HOW AI IS POWERING INNOVATION IN HERITAGE BRANDS

We often discuss the world of luxury and the critical roles that craftsmanship, tradition, and heritage play in sustaining this sphere. We were particularly intrigued to learn that legacy brand Bentley has announced the introduction of AI to run alongside some of their most craft-led processes, specifically their leather inspection process. The AI-powered Hide Inspection programme will revolutionise the way leather is assessed and selected for use, reducing waste and cost while detecting tiny imperfections otherwise unseen by the naked eye. As designers of bespoke pieces ourselves, we look to our peers to see how they are using modern technology and traditional craft alongside each other to deliver the very finest products while championing waste reduction and improving quality.

A NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF DIOR MENSWEAR

Responsible for transforming the viral Loewe tomato meme into a luxury clutch, Jonathan Anderson’s 11-year tenure at Loewe has now officially concluded, with his newly announced appointment as the artistic director of Dior menswear. As the recipient of the Designer of the Year award for two consecutive years and with a flair that draws artistic references from a deep understanding of the worlds adjacent to fashion, we are excited to see him take the helm of one of the most iconic French fashion houses in the world. Having shaped so much of Loewe’s identity, it will be interesting see how their next chapter unfolds too. We will be watching closely.

PRADA ACQUIRES VERSACE

Last month, we shared the news of Donatella Versace’s departure as the brand enters a new era, so it certainly caught our attention when Prada announced its acquisition of Versace for €1.25 billion. Despite recent headlines regarding Trump’s proposed tariffs, the deal highlights the continued global expansion of fashion and marks the emergence of what looks to be an Italian fashion powerhouse. As they continue to shape the industry with its strong, family-owned heritage, we look forward to seeing how the House of Prada will bring Versace into its next chapter.

WALPOLE FLY THE FLAG FOR BRITISH LUXURY

Speaking of tariffs, it’s been a topic difficult to ignore, sparking considerable conversation around its implications for the luxury market. As Walpole members, it is always reassuring to know that Helen Brocklebank is at the forefront of British luxury, advocating for our industry. Addressing the potential impact and calling for the reintroduction of tax-free shopping, Helen commented: “Now is the time to act. Reinstating tax-free shopping would send a clear signal that Britain is open for business: confident, competitive, and committed to its world-leading industries.” We agree and the numbers speak for themselves. ABU DHABI GUGGENHEIM TO OPEN LATER THIS YEAR

The much-anticipated opening of the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi is set for later this year, further establishing the UAE’s capital as a cultural and tourism hub. Designed by Frank Gehry, the museum is reported to be the largest of the four Guggenheims. This exciting addition is part of a flurry of new openings, following the recent debut of teamLab Phenomena. The Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum are also expected to open later this year - giving us even more to explore on our next OBS trip!

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PLASTIC TO FULLY DISOLVE IN SEA WATER

As we celebrate Earth Day this week, we were excited to see one (in our opinion) of the most promising innovations in sustainability. As committed members of Positive Luxury, we continuously seek out pioneering developments in the industry. Recently, we were interested by reports from Japanese scientists who have designed a plastic that not only dissolves in seawater but also enriches soil health by releasing fertiliser as it breaks down. This ground breaking advancement has the potential to address the urgent environmental threat posed by single-use plastics and we look forward to following its impact with great interest.

OLIVER BURNS STUDIO X WALPOLE WEEKEND WINDOWN

We were thrilled to curate Walpole’s Weekend Winddown last week, sharing some of our favourite tracks for alfresco evenings. Reflecting on the playlist curation, our Founder and Creative Director, Sharon Lillywhite, commented: "It’s the perfect soundtrack for weekend entertaining - whether you're hosting rooftop drinks or gathering for the first outdoor dinners of the season."
